Two years after the eardrum-assaulting first instalment, Michael Bay's 'bots return for more decibel-laden carnage in this summer's first bona fide blockbuster.

Big, loud and definitely not clever, it's a giant, lumbering idiot of a movie that, were it not for all the explosions, would send the most devoted action fans to sleep.

With a yawning hole where the plot should be, a cast chosen for their looks rather than their acting chops and nothing to offer except stuff blowing up, what we have is two hours of director Bay banging toys together.

transformers_2_revenge_of_the_fallen_main630_01_1-02011

Less a movie and more an action-figure advertorial, Shia LaBeouf returns as teenager Sam Witwicky who, you may recall, saved the world in the first film by teaming up with the shapeshifting Autobots against the evil Decepticons.

When we catch up with him, Sam is heading to university, leaving behind his fretting parents and his unbelievably hot girlfriend Mikaela (Megan Fox).

Meanwhile in Washington, the Pentagon is hunting down and eliminating the remaining Decepticons. But when Sam discovers a piece of the mythical Allspark, an ancient artefact that gives the Transformers life, battle is rejoined with Autobot leader Optimus Prime taking on the Decepticons' boss Megatron.

Bigger, brasher and noisier than anything you've seen, it's certainly a visual spectacle with great special effects. Right from the off, Bay wastes no time in showing us what a $200m movie looks like with a spectacular face-off in Shanghai involving a gigantic shape-shifting unicycle.

Later, when the action moves to the Middle East, there's an almighty mêlée that'll appeal to everyone's inner idiot.

Thing is, none of it really hits home since nobody's bothered with a storyline - it's just a series of battles held together with the ropiest of dialogue.

As far as acting goes, LaBeouf is reliably dreadful, while Fox wears little more than cut-off jeans and a pout. At least John Turturro brings something to the table as a crackpot conspiracy theorist.

Appealing visuals combined with graphical technicalities has been producer M. Shyam Prasad Reddy’s stronghold since his first inception ‘Ammoru’ which gave way for wonders in Telugu cinema. Following the movie’s smash hit ‘Anji’ came posing an unique plot filled with twists and turns.

The delay in the release of Shyam Prasad’s latest movie ‘Arundhathi’ has no way affected its charm. His passion for cinema made him undergo such a long project that took 3 years to be conceived on celluloid. The makers unveiled the Sankranthi special film on Jan 16th that has made the audience spellbound.

The days and months of burning the mid-night oil and the filmmakers toil could be related on screen. When I come doesn’t matter but how I impress when I arrive does. In the same way, the days we took to finish is not what matters but the quality work bought out does. These could be the words rewinding in Shyam Prasad’s mind and it reflects in the end product. Read below for a concise review on ‘Arundhati’.

Story

The story unfolds with young girl Arundhati (Anushka)’s arrival to her ancestors palace located in the outskirts of Gadwal province. Engaged to her beloved Rahul (Deepak), she is filled with joy about her impending marriage. Arundhati’s grandfather, Bhupathi Raja (Kaikala Satyanarayana) and Chandramma (Manorama), their loyal maid look upon her as the heiress in the lineage next to Jejamma (Anushka), the princess of Gadwal province three generations back.

The time shifts to the past revealing the daring princess Jejamma who fights and slays the evil doer Pashupathi (Sonu Sood). She restores peace in her reign and Pasupathi’s soul prevails around his Samadhi bound by a magical spell. He awaits the time to break free and get his vengeance on the princess.

In the present, a couple on their way to meet Arundhathi with her wedding cards meets with an accident near the haveli (mansion). The lady goes missing and the man possessed by evil spirits breaks open the Samadhi. A Fakeer Anwar (Shayaji Shinde) who dwells around the place senses bad omen and summons Arundhathi to vacate the place for her own safety.

The Good VS Evil fight begins as Pashupathi mistakes Arundhathi for Jejamma and seeks revenge on her.

How the young girl Arundhati fights back the evil spirit and reigns over the evil doer in the present unveils on screen in a twisty, edge-of-the-seat narration filled with spellbinding visualization and astounding graphics.

Performance of Artists

Anushka, who appeared as a glamour doll till date, sheens in this new role that gives her space to perform onscreen. She is seen in a fresh antique look in one of the dual roles as Jejamma. Her performance as Arundhathi is also laudable. Although her work in a few scenes, in the second half is disappointing, her overall performance is appealing.

Sonu Sood the debuted star of 'Super' has improved considerably and his performance in the negative shade as Pashupathi is excellent. Ravi shankar's dubbing for the character brings life to the role on screen. The expressions and gestures of Subhashini who has played Pashupathi’s mother is good.

Kaikala Satyanarayana has returned after a long gap in movies. Ahuthi Prasad, Chalapathi Rao, SivaParvathi, Annapurna, Manorama, Meena, Jayalalitha have all did well in their respected characters. Baby Divya who played Arundhathi in her childhood years has exhibited a notable performance. Shayaji Shinde as the fakeer has made his presence felt in the movie.

Technicians Work

Koti has composed excellent tracks for the movie. Even though he was prominently not heard for sometime, he has made a mark. Especially, his background musical score that stands as the main highlight for the film.

The most important aspect to be taken note of is the special effects. Bringing back the old palace to life (taking the audience to the past glory of the palace); the murders committed by Pashupathi; the climax sequences in the old palace; the scenes depicting the raise of the spirit from the dormant samadhi and creating a havoc are notable. All this was mainly because of Senthil Kumars photography, Ashok's creative work in construction of sets. Surely these are the key elements in the film. Rahul Nambiar's creativity is also good.

The dialogues 'Ammaale…bommaale…' written by Chinthapalli Ramana, has given a caricature for the character of Pashupathi. His dialogues for Arundhathi suit the feel.

MS Reddy, Dr C Narayana Reddy, Ananth Sriram and Veturi's lyrics are nice. The song penned for Jejamma is enjoyable.

Shivshankars choreography in the sequences, while the spirit is being bound with the spell, is exceptionally well. During the drum dance, if the re-recording had been done on a high pitch, it would have been even better in the cinema halls.

Shyam Prasad Reddy’s pure passion for cinema unlike other producers interest in commercialism is evident in ‘Arundhathi’. Based on a heroine-centric subject, he has daringly invested 13 crores to churn out a spectacular entertainer sans compromise, which has re-established Mallemala Entertainments banner value.

Director's Portrayal

The director of cop stories, Kodi Ramakrishna got the name as the maker of graphical extravaganzas with M. Shyam Prasad Reddy’s produced ‘Ammoru’. He was away busy with small time movies and some predicted he might join the list of veteran directors. He did come back with a big budget magnum opus like ‘Arundhathi’ and reiterated his niche in creativity with this mile stone project.

Criticism

Shyam Prasad holds maximum credit for investing the huge amount in a woman oriented subject that didn’t use Anushka’s glam looks but her acting skills. His daring move has passed out with flying colors and has come out in glory. Even though two days late for the festival, ‘Arundhathi’ is the latest sensation and box officer forecasters predict it will rain collections in the coming days.

In a nutshell, ‘Arundhathi’ is Shyam Prasad’s technical wonder that had brilliantly reached the target.

Bachna Ae Haseeno Review

Bachna Ae Haseeno is a movie for all the guys out there, not that it has nothing in it for the female audience. The guys would easily connect with the male lead character. The other characters too are well etched and easy to identify with.

The movie starts off well, the first half is a romantic comedy with the main lead (Ranbir Kapoor) involved in 3 love stories. The first story with Minissha Lamba is sweet typical teenage romance. Its funny at times and well directed. The second with Bipasha Basu is about a live-in relationship. It’s exactly what most guys seek for, a non committal relationship with a hot woman. The final romance with Deepika, the most important of the three as most of what followed in the second half is a consequence of the Deepika – Ranbir story, isn’t convincing. Overall though, the first half is entertaining.

The second half is emotional (which is okay), a bit too long and very predictable. The execution of the script by the director especially in the second half could have been better. The editing too could have been much crisper. The music and locations, well it’s almost like a world tour with a song in every single location. Two songs stand out, the classic Bachna Ae Haseeno and Khuda Jaane. The cinematography is fantastic; the locales of Australia and Italy have been beautifully captured.

An Icon collapses as GM declares bankruptcy Monday

WASHINGTON (AFP) - - General Motors will declare bankruptcy Monday, marking the end of an era of American manufacturing dominance as what was once the world's largest corporation collapses under the weight of its mistakes and debts.

Senior US officials detailed Sunday what they hope will be a swift process in which GM should be able to reemerge from bankruptcy protection as a new, leaner company within 60 to 90 days.

General Motors will enter the courtroom with billions in government financing and agreements already in place to cut labor costs, swap much of its debt for equity and reduce its liabilities by 50 percent.

Officials said the process is expected to be similar to that of Chrysler, which is expected to emerge from bankruptcy protection this week after just over a month.

However, the process will not be "as speedy as Chrysler because GM is a far larger, far more complicated global company," senior administration officials cautioned.

President Barack Obama is to hold a press conference at 11:55 am (1555 GMT) Monday to discuss the state of the automotive industry.

Newly appointed GM chief executive officer Fritz Henderson, who is expected to continue to steer the new company, will speak to the media shortly afterwards.

"It'll have a huge impact in the United States because it's more than just a corporation -- it's an icon," said Gary Chaison, a professor of labor relations at Clark University.

"It represented manufacturing supremacy and good jobs for American workers. That's gone."

GM has already begun a major restructuring of its operations that will "allow the company to move toward profitability even if the auto market recovers slowly," senior administration officials said.

The largest US automaker will close 11 plants and idle three others as it slashes its operating costs in order to lower its breakeven point by 40 percent in terms of overall US industry sales.

The US government will provide an additional 30.1 billion dollars in financing to help GM restructure under court protection and will receive a 60 percent stake in the new company. It has already provided 19.4 billion dollars in loans.

Officials cautioned that the Obama administration has no intention of nationalizing General Motors and will not be participating in its day-to-day operations.

"The government has no desire to own equity stakes in companies any longer than necessary, and will actively seek to dispose of its ownership as soon as practicable," senior administration officials said in a media briefing.

"The goal is to promote strong viable companies that can become profitable quickly and contribute to economic growth and jobs without government involvement."

The governments of Canada and Ontario, which have several GM factories, will provide an additional 9.5 billion dollars in financing and receive a 12 percent stake.

Creditors holding about 54 percent of General's Motors bonds agreed to a plan that would swap 27.1 billion dollars in debt for a 10 percent stake and warrants for an additional 15 percent stake, officials said.

Bondholders who rejected the plan could still fight it in court, but the government maintains they could end up with little or nothing if they take that path.

A retiree health care trust will receive a 17.5 percent stake in the new GM and 6.5 billion dollars in preferred stock in exchange for forgiving much of a 20-billion-dollar obligation.

Employees will continue to be paid and GM will immediately seek permission to continue to pay suppliers and honor customer warranties.

GM will also offer about 40 percent of its dealers 18 months to wind down their operations and will immediately seek permission to honor incentives offered to its remaining dealers.

On Monday, New York bankruptcy judge Arthur Gonzales was set to rule on number three US automaker Chrysler, which filed for bankruptcy protection on April 30.

Under an expedited process, Gonzales was expected to approve the creation of a new Chrysler that would preserve the automaker's healthiest assets and liquidate the rest.

The new entity will be controlled by a consortium consisting of the Italian automaker Fiat, the United Auto Workers union's retiree health care trust fund, and the US and Canadian governments.

Fiat will have a 20 percent stake with the option to increase it to 35 percent; the UAW 55 percent; and the US and Canadian governments 10 percent.

what is LHC...

Large Hadron Collider Experiment - The Purpose
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) just outside Geneva, Switzerland, is one of the most profound scientific projects ever conceived. It is located between France and Switzerland and operated by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Scientists from around the world hope it will be fully operational in September 2009.

The ultimate goal of the LHC is to answer huge scientific questions about the sub-atomic world, the massive cosmos, and their finely-tuned relationship. Initially, it’s an attempt to observe theoretical particles that scientists hypothesize should be there. Ultimately, it’s an attempt to understand the creation of the cosmos and the powerful complexity and design that permeates the particle realm.

Large Hadron Collider Experiment - What is Large?
The Large Hadron Collider is the largest machine in the world. The two accelerator rings are five miles in diameter and nearly 17 miles in circumference. It is the world’s largest refrigeration system with 9,600 magnets cooled to -271 degrees centigrade. It has four large detectors weighing from eleven to 25 million pounds each, and two smaller detectors.

Large Hadron Collider Experiment - What is a Hadron?
Hadrons are sub-atomic particles interacting with the Strong Nuclear Force. What is the Strong Nuclear Force? It is the strongest force in the universe, yet only operates within the nucleus of an atom. It is the force mediated by fundamental particles called gluons, which hold together three fundamental particles called quarks, which make up a proton or a neutron. The Strong Nuclear Force diminishes in strength as quarks get closer and increases in strength as they get further apart. There is no known natural phenomenon strong enough to separate the three quarks. The second order effect for the Strong Nuclear Force is to hold protons and neutrons together in the nucleus of an atom. This strong interaction is liberated during a nuclear reaction, such as what takes place in the sun, a nuclear bomb, or a nuclear reactor.

Large Hadron Collider Experiment - What is a Collider?
A collider is an underground, nearly circular, vacuum tube accelerator, in which charged particles move in opposite directions close to the speed of light. The particles are accelerated and kept at a constant energy by electromagnetic resonators. The particle beams are focused by quadrupole magnets and maintained in their orbit by dipole magnets. When the computers and detectors are ready, proton or lead ion beams are collided at four points where the two rings intersect. The two beams colliding from opposite directions doubles the energy released to an equivalent of 100,000 times the heat at the center of the sun! The detectors capture the moment of particle collision and the computers analyze the data for months and years to come.

What is the Intent?
The ultimate intent of the LHC is to help scientists understand the nature of matter at the moment the cosmos was created. Why did matter remain when matter and anti-matter annihilated each other in an energy transformation during the creation of the cosmos? What happened to the anti-matter? What makes up the 96% of the cosmos we now call “dark matter” and “dark energy?” Does the “Higgs field” (aka, “God’s boson force carrier”) that mysteriously gives mass to particles really exist? What about hidden, extra dimensions of space that quantum models show exist?

In a nutshell, the Large Hadron Collider experiment is a huge scientific effort to sneak a glimpse into the Mind of God at the moment of creation… Stay tuned!

God particle glimpsed?

Nothing makes my ears prick up more than a rumour that the Higgs boson has been found. For years physicists have been searching for this fleeting speck of matter using the most powerful colliders they have to hand at CERN and Fermilab. The Higgs boson tops the list of physicists? most-wanted discoveries - some have even dubbed it the God particle.

So when I stumbled across a blog by Tommaso Dorigosuggesting that his experiment might just have found the Higgs, I avidly read on.

Dorigo is in the know. He is a particle physicist at the University of Padova in Italy and works on the CDF experiment (pictured), one of two vast detectors built to analyse collisions between protons and antiprotons at Fermilab?s Tevatron accelerator.

The rumour that CDF has seen the Higgs is already spreading.

So why the fuss? Our best theory of matter and the forces that glue it together predicts that the Higgs is what gives other particles their mass.

You?re made up of atoms - some of us more than others. And atoms get their mass from the protons, neutrons and electrons inside. But start asking where electrons and the quarks that reside inside protons and neutrons get their mass from and you?ve hit one of the biggest unknowns in physics.

In the 1960s, theorist Peter Higgs at the University of Edinburgh worked out a mechanism to do it, involving a particle later named after him. It?s our best stab at an answer, so finding the Higgs is a really big deal.

In the CDF experiment, the energy created when protons and antiprotons smash together transforms itself via the equation E=mc2 into massive particles, including (physicists hope) the Higgs. In fact, recent results from CDF showed in a roundabout way that the Higgs should probably weigh no more than about 153 GeV, or 160 times heavier than a proton and well within reach of the Tevatron.

According to theory, the Higgs boson lives for less than the blink of an eye before decaying into other particles. Among the easiest to spot amid all the detritus in the detector should be the decay to two heavy electron-like particles called taus. From the momentum and energy of the tau pairs, the CDF team can work out the mass of the mother particle.

CDF found a small bump in their mass plot near 160 GeV ? on the fringes of the allowed range. Dorigo is careful to point out that the statistical significance of the result is not yet strong enough to claim a discovery. The measurement lies only two standard deviations outside the theory.

?We?d need 3 standard deviations before we claimed we?d seen a hint of the Higgs,? says Mark Lancaster, a particle physicist at University College London and a CDF team member, ?and we?d need 5 standard deviations before we said anything officially.?

My guess is that when the experiment collects more data, this enigmatic signal will disappear. Which would be a shame. I?d love the Tevatron to find the Higgs before the next big atom smasher, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, gets into its stride.

Though the LHC is due to turn on later this year, it will take months or years to get enough collisions to claim a discovery.

So there still a chance that the Tevatron could pip the LHC to one of the biggest prizes in physics. It?s just what particle physics, especially in the US, needs to maintain the public?s interest and government funding.

Dorigo?s blog raises another interesting point. Particle physics is big science and its collaborations are getting bigger. More than 400 physicists are members of the CDF team. At the LHC, the teams are 1800 strong. With so many team members and the ever fattening blogosphere, how will the teams stop news of their results from leaking out before they are ready to publish? And should they even try to stop it?

'God' particle not a heavyweight, studies suggest

higgs.jpg

The possibility of a high-mass Higgs boson may have just evaporated with new data released today by the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois. The result could mean a tougher, more protracted search for a welterweight version of the Higgs, the much-sought-after subatomic particle whose discovery would be a major triumph for particle physics and bring fame to the team who finds it first.

At the heart of the new result is a more precise measurement of the W boson. This is a well known particle, a mediator of the weak force, whose mass is theoretically linked to the Higgs.

The improved measurement will undoubtedly narrow the range of allowable values for the Higgs mass, and may well close off a narrow window on the upper end of that range where direct searches have not yet penetrated.

Prior to last summer, the Higgs was known to reside somewhere in an energy range between 114 Gev and 185 Gev (assuming it exists at all). This is near the limit of where Fermilab's Tevatron can reliably search, but over time researchers have steadily amassed data that could reveal or rule out the Higgs at various energies.

In August, researchers announced they had excluded a value near 170 GeV, the energy where it would be statistically easiest to separate the Higgs signal from background noise. Since then, the possibility that the Higgs might be seen first by the Tevatron, rather than by its successor, the Large Hadron Collider in Europe, has added incentive and drama to the search.

The improved W boson measurement released today was performed by DZero, one of the Tevatrons's two key detectors. The new value, which researchers kept hidden even from themselves until last week, to avoid bias, is 80.401 +/- .044 GeV. This is remarkably close to the current world average of 80.398 GeV.

The chief impact of the measurement is not its value but how much it will reduce the overall uncertainty in the W boson mass. According to Heidi Schellman of Northwestern University, that error could shrink by as much as 10% once it is combined with other measurements. This, in turn, could drop the upper limit on the Higgs mass by 5 GeV or more, making the remaining space between 170 and 180 GeV uncomfortably tight, even for a tiny particle like the Higgs.

"If someone is trying to sell you a 175 GeV Higgs, I wouldn't buy it," Schellman told me.

The news comes just ahead of a widely anticipated announcement on Friday from DZero and its counterpart, CDF, that a wider swath of values around 170 GeV have now been excluded. In other words, a heavy Higgs could be gone by the weekend.

If so, attention will shift to a region below 160 GeV where it is somewhat harder for both the Tevatron and the LHC to see the Higgs. Tevatron seems to be at an advantage, however, because it is working steadily and gradually building up data, while the LHC is on the sidelines following a liquid helium spill last fall.

Earlier this week, researchers at Fermilab also announced they've spotted collisions that produce single top quarks. Such collisions are easily concealed by background noise. Their discovery reinforces predictions that Fermilab should be able to spot a Higgs boson as light as 120 GeV by late 2010.

The Higgs boson is the last undiscovered particle in the so-called Standard Model of particle physics. A first discovery of the Higgs at Fermilab would be electrifying for a facility that is perceived as having long passed its heyday and a shot in the arm for US experimental physicists who have felt that the momentum in their field has shifted to Europe. Researchers agree that even if the Higgs is spotted first at Fermilab, the LHC will still be needed to confirm the find and to explore the new physics that lies beyond, as researchers move into a high-energy domain where the Tevatron cannot follow.

Illustration: The green shading in the graphs above shows the masses that seem to be ruled out for the Higgs boson. Today's new W boson result lowers the upper limit to an estimated 180 GeV or less. Friday's result is expected to significantly grow the excluded range around 170 GeV, which could seal off the right-hand window of possible values completely. (Courtesy of Dmitri Denisov, DZero)
